Update 6/9/04

Here are the arrangements for the June dinner drive. We will gather at the Target shopping center in Fountain Hills, corner of Shea and Saguaro Blvds at 12:15 PM and we'll depart at 12:30.  Please assemble at the NE end of the parking lot. Please have a full fuel tank. We will make appropriate comfort and fuel stops during the trip. Please remember to bring your club radio. My cell phone number is 480.620.4204 and Carol's is 602.284.0905 should you get hopelessly lost and need to reconnect with the group.

The route: We'll travel north on Hwy 87 to Payson.  We will NOT stop at the Casino as we usually do because Dan & Teresa Parks, our club members in Payson, have invited us to their home for the rest stop. They are located approximately 2.5 mile NE of the intersection of Hwy's 87 & 260. A copy of the map to their home is here. Please print it out and bring it with you in case you get separated from the group. We expect the stop will take approximately 35 to 45 minutes and then we'll be back on the road headed east on Hwy 260. Since there is extensive road construction on 260 between Heber and Show Low, we will pick up Hwy 277 out of Heber headed to Snowflake. This is a diversion from our usual route so please stay alert to the change. Then from Snowflake we will come back south on Hwy 73 into Show Low. There, we will pick up Hwy 260 again and take it on into Pinetop. This is about a 15 mile drive through the combined city area at traffic speeds of approximately 40 mph. Best not to push it here as the cops can be active in this area. The Christmas Tree restaurantis actually in Lakeside at 455 Woodland Rd and the phone number is 1-928-367-3107. The directions given me by them, say to follow hwy 260 into Lakeside and when you come to the traffic light by the High School, turn right to the restaurant, it will be visible from that point.

Our timing should bring us to the restaurant near 5PM which is the time they open. We expect to be seated and have our orders in by 5:30 and probably finish by 7PM. The return trip is estimated at 3 hours under the moonlight and cool evening air. Some members may chose to return via Salt River Canyon, a bit longer, and other will take 260 back through Show low, Heber and Payson. We'll sort this out near the end of the dinner.  The road construction in the evening will probably not be underway so we won't have to contend with flagmen and equipment delays on Hwy 260 during the return trip.

The only other element I can think of is the fact that they are having forest fires up in that direction. We hope that between now and the 19th they will have the fires out. Perhaps one of you computer gurus can check on this around Thursday and send me whatever info you can find out. As of today, June 9th, we have 18 cars and 34 hungry souls making the trip.

We will have a tour in July but there are no plans formulated at this time. More to follow later. We also expect to schedule a go karting event in the near future as several members have requested it. More info on this as we work it out with the F1 Raceway.

Looking forward to the June drive

Cheers
